ATI TEAS 7 Science Section:
The A&P Topics That Actually Show Up

TEAS exam nursing

The Science section is where most TEAS 7 test-takers lose their composite score. With 50 questions in 63 minutes and a heavy emphasis on Anatomy & Physiology, it requires the most specialized preparation of all four sections. Here's exactly what's tested — based on thousands of TEAS exams our team has completed.

TEAS 7 Science Overview

Total questions: 50 (44 scored + 6 unscored)
Time limit: 63 minutes
% of total TEAS score: ~30%
Hardest section for most candidates

The Science section is divided into three content areas: Human Anatomy & Physiology (most questions), Biology, and Chemistry. Scientific Reasoning questions are woven throughout.

A&P Breakdown — Body Systems Tested

Human A&P makes up the largest portion of the Science section. Based on our exam data, these body systems appear most frequently:

Cardiovascular System: Heart chambers, valves, blood flow pathway, electrical conduction, blood pressure regulation, types of blood vessels
Respiratory System: Gas exchange, alveoli function, breathing mechanics, lung volumes, oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation
Musculoskeletal System: Bone types, joints, muscle contraction (sliding filament theory), skeletal muscle anatomy
Nervous System: Neuron anatomy, nerve impulse transmission, CNS vs PNS, autonomic nervous system, brain regions
Endocrine System: Hormones and their glands, feedback loops (negative/positive), insulin, glucose regulation
Digestive System: Organs and their functions, enzyme actions, nutrient absorption, liver and pancreas roles
Urinary/Renal System: Kidney anatomy, nephron function, urine formation, acid-base balance
Immune System: Innate vs adaptive immunity, lymphocytes, antibodies, vaccination principles

Biology Topics

Biology questions focus on cell biology and genetics:

  • Cell structure — organelles and their functions (especially mitochondria, ribosomes, nucleus, cell membrane)
  • Cell division — mitosis vs meiosis, phases of each
  • DNA structure — base pairing, replication, transcription, translation
  • Genetics — Mendelian inheritance, dominant/recessive traits, Punnett squares
  • Ecosystems, food chains, and energy flow (less heavily tested but present)

Chemistry Topics

Chemistry questions on TEAS 7 are at a high school level:

  • Atomic structure — protons, neutrons, electrons, atomic number, mass number
  • Periodic table — element properties, periods vs groups, trends
  • Chemical bonding — ionic, covalent, hydrogen bonds
  • Acids and bases — pH scale, buffers, acid-base reactions
  • Biochemistry basics — carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids (macromolecules)

Tips for the Science Section

  1. Prioritize A&P over Chemistry: More A&P questions appear than Chemistry. If your study time is limited, invest more in body systems — especially cardiovascular and nervous.
  2. Use diagrams: Labeling diagrams of the heart, nephron, and neuron is more efficient than memorizing paragraphs of text.
  3. Practice time management: 63 minutes for 50 questions = 1.26 minutes per question. Budget appropriately and flag questions to return to.
  4. Don't panic on unfamiliar topics: Some questions cover less common material. Use process of elimination and your broader science knowledge.
